Rockstar released earlier this week a massive free update for Grand Theft Auto Online. For the most part, it focused on improving and expanding on what was already in the game. But the update also included a new set of missions that included covert government operations and conspiracies, and this new campaign ends with what is easy GTA OnlineThe scariest mission ever that surprises many unsuspecting players.

GTA Onlinelatest update from , “criminal companies‘ was a big issue that helped make the game feel more modern while also making it easier (and more fun) to make money in-game. It’s actually a solid update Nerfing of the legendary OP jet bike and adding the ability to walk in the casino. While it added a really crappy semi-automatic rifle that no one likes is a small flaw in an otherwise great patch.

Also added a new campaign consisting of some missions involving the IAA (GTA‘s version of the CIA) fighting to stop a wealthy family from controlling the planet’s oil prices. Don’t give them too much credit as they want to adopt the technology the family uses so they can control the prices themselves.

But what I and many others didn’t expect was that this spy thriller full of car chases and gunfights ends with a spooky horror game-like mission that’s really scary and disturbing. I don’t want to spoil it for people who haven’t played it, so here’s your spoiler alert!

In the final mission, the IAA sends you to a bunker that was last seen in the “Doomsday Raidupdate. It turns out that the super AI that was developed and housed here wasn’t completely erased by the authorities when they raided the place, and so a rich family was able to control oil prices – with a copy of that AI (Just nod your head and pretend that makes sense…) Inside the bunker, the power is out, and “sleeping” robots with human faces lurk in hallways and around corners. These are the juggernauts of Doomsdayand they were left here to winter because apparently the IAA is really bad at cleaning up their messes.

These slumbering behemoths appear to be breathing, or at least make a sound that sounds like breathing. If you’re walking around in the dark and relying on a flashlight, these things will occasionally make different noises and even twitch. In fact, I swear one of them moved when I wasn’t looking. Rockstar also made sure to place these creepy juggernauts in specific spots where you’ll encounter them or hear them if you look elsewhere for fuses to turn the power back on.

I won’t give awards for you guessing what happens when you turn the power back on and start hacking into the place: shocker, all those creepy robotic bastards are waking up and starting to get you. But after sneaking past them in the dark for about 20 minutes, you at least know how many are waiting and how long you have to hike to escape the bunker. Luckily, I had my giant Gatling laser cannon with me and made short work of everyone before escaping and completing the mission.

Like me, other players who threw themselves into this final mission had no idea what to expect Many have shared stories online from how scary it was, with one player suggesting that he will now have trouble sleeping. others shared how tense they felt sneaking around in the dark, and tried to avoid the robots for fear that touching them would activate the bad guys. It should also be noted that you need to find one of the fuses is hidden behind breakable boxeswhich is a very unusual game mechanic for a GTA Online Mission. Many players report that they have spent a long time sneaking through the dark corridors, desperately trying to find the last fuse to escape the nightmare.

I love it when Rockstar experiments and gets creative GTA Online missions. Almost a decade after its release, driving around and just shooting a bunch of people is a bit boring. Arbitrarily end things with a Thin man-like experience is not only fun, but also a great way to keep the game feel fresh after all these years. More of this in the future, Rockstar.
